Malta

Here are my usual links:

The Maltese language is interesting and unusual in Europe in having its roots in medieval Arabic (though it is written in a Latin character set but with a number of its own characters). Both Maltese and English are official languages of Malta. There is a recognised sign language, Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija (LSM) which apparently has some links to British Sign Language (BSL) but is not formally recognised as part of the BSL family. Maltese and Malta are also interesting as one of the countries in Europe (and the world of course) in which a very high proportion of the population are bilingual in Maltese and, usually, English though many also speak Italian.
