Ecuador

Here are my usual links:

Ecuador is now my principal academic location courtesy of Professor Clara Paz and UDLA, the Universidad de Las Américas in Quito and I have visited in 2019 and 2024 to this amazing country. The official language is Spanish and Professor Paz and I have looked at how differences between Spanish in Ecuador and in Spain affect translations, see Evans, Paz & Mascialino (2021). “Infeliz” or “Triste”: A Paradigm for Mixed Methods Exploration of Outcome Measures Adaptation Across Language Variants. Frontiers in Psychology, 12, 695893. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.695893 (open access) for the CORE-OM and work submitted looking at the YP-CORE. We have conducted psychometrics exploration of the CORE-OM for the help-seeking (Valdiviezo-Oña, J., Evans, C., & Paz, C. (2024). Clinical Utility of the CORE-OM and CORE-10. Collabra: Psychology, 10(1), 121932. https://doi.org/10.1525/collabra.121932) and the non-help seeking (Paz, C., Mascialino, G., & Evans, C. (2020). Exploration of the psychometric properties of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure in Ecuador. BMC Psychology, 8(1), 94. https://doi.org/10.1186/s40359-020-00443-z) populations According to Wikipedia “13 native languages are also recognized, including Quechua and Shuar“. Discussions with members of the indigenous communities have convinced us that translating CORE measures, and even the family rating SCORE measures would be a mistake as the indigenous communities’ focus is on communal health not individual. We may be working with a local NGO on developing a measure of “Sumak Kawsay”, which does not have a direct translation, but broadly refers to ‘holistic health’ and to collective health.
